The Tuskegee Student Uprising book launch

The Tuskegee Student Uprising book launch
The Tuskegee Institute, one of the nation’s most important historically Black colleges, is primarily known for its World War II pilot training program, a fateful syphilis experiment, and the work of its founder, Booker T. Washington. In The Tuskegee Student Uprising, Brian Jones explores an important yet understudied aspect of the campus’s history: its radical student activism. Drawing upon years of archival research and interviews with former students, professors, and administrators, Brian Jones provides an in-depth account of one of the most dynamic student movements in United States history. Join us for a limited-capacity in-person book launch event and celebration with Brian Jones, Jen Johnson and Elizabeth Todd-Breland about this important historical uprising and lessons for educational justice movements today. Speakers: Brian Jones is the Director of The New York Public Library’s Center for Educators and Schools and the author of The Tuskegee Student Uprising: A History. Jen Johnson is the Chief Of Staff at Chicago Teachers Union. Elizabeth Todd-Breland is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the author of A Political Education: Black Politics and Education Reform in Chicago since the 1960s. _____________________________________________________ This event is sponsored by Haymarket Books and NYU Press.

Support Haymarket's Work

In 2026, we’re celebrating 25 years of publishing “Books for Changing the World.” In those 25 years, we’ve helped build critical space and infrastructure for radical ideas and movements on the left to grow. That work of institution-building and popular political education has never been more necessary or more urgent. We need your help to continue to do this work.
